Soham Sankaran, PopVax’s founder and computational lead, is a Yale CS graduate who dropped out of his robotics-focused CS PhD at Cornell, and previously founded the Y Combinator-backed manufacturing automation company Pashi.

Dr. Maunish Barvalia, PopVax’s VP of Platform Technologies, Head of Immunology & Nucleic Acid Delivery, has a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from UBC focusing on single-cell techniques, and worked with Dr. Pieter Cullis on immune cell-targeted LNP delivery at UBC and NanoVation Therapeutics.

PopVax is a Gates Foundation-funded full-stack biotech startup based in Hyderabad working on broadly protective mRNA vaccines using a machine learning-enabled computational approach to antigen design and their own in-house mRNA-LNP platform. They started with a pan-betacoronavirus vaccine candidate that they will be taking into a Phase I human trial at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, early next year, and are now initiating programs to develop first-in-the-world vaccines against other commercially relevant targets. Founded in 2021, the company is staffed by veterans of mRNA-LNP pioneers like Moderna and the Cullis lab at UBC, as well as leading Indian vaccine companies such as Shantha Biotech/Sanofi India and Biological E.
