BRI Awards & Funding

Each year, the Brigham Research Institute offers a wide range of funding opportunities through a number of awards and programs. These awards range from $500 to $100,000.

Project-Based Research Awards

BRIght Futures Prize Request for Proposals

Due April 22, 2024

$100,000 to be awarded via an international public voting process (after internal review) to investigators who are working to answer provocative questions or solve grand problems.

BWH Health & Technology Innovation Fund

LOI Due Dec 9, 2024

Shark Tank style competition for $50,000 non-renewable grants to fund innovative and high-risk/high-impact projects with the potential to impact biomedical research, healthcare delivery, generation of new companies/products/services, cost savings, care quality, and provider burnout.

BRI Pilot Funding Awards

Due June 3, 2024

Up to $50,000 direct costs to support obtaining preliminary data for basic, clinical, or translational projects that will be used to apply for new funding (with a minimum projected 10x return on investment from the requested amount).

Microgrants

Rolling application.

Small awards, typically $500 – $1,500, to support junior investigators pursuing a new scientific project, training, or collaboration not otherwise funded in their labs. Up to $2,500 available for URiM, women, health equity projects, and collaborations.

Non-Faculty Awards

Postdoc Scholars Award for Excellence in Mentoring

Nominations accepted annually in September.

$500-$1,000 cash awards recognizing postdoctoral fellows’ efforts in mentoring fellow postdocs, students or interns on research projects and/or career development.

BWH PLC Travel Support for BWH Postdocs

Due Friday, October 4, 2024

$500 to $1,000 awards towards travel expenditures for BWH postdocs attending conferences. Awards will be administered biannually in the Fall (October) and Spring (April).

Research Staff Excellence Awards

No longer offered

Two awards of $1,000. Research Assistants/Technicians and Clinical Research Coordinators (or similar) at the Brigham are eligible to apply. Does not include postdoctoral fellows.

Career and Bridge Funding

President’s Scholars Awards

Nominations due April 1, 2024

$100,000 per year for three years for up to three Assistant or Associate Professors who have made outstanding contributions to their chosen field of research and have exceptional potential. Department chairs may nominate up to three candidates.

Fund to Sustain Research Excellence

Due First Monday of April, August, and December

$75,000 in interim support for independent investigators who submitted a non-mentored NIH grant application that was reviewed but missed the funding payline. Recipients will be chosen based on need and merit.

Faculty Career Development Awards

Due Monday, February 26, 2024

$30,000 of transitional funding during the early critical years of an academic career when junior faculty are juggling increased professional and personal responsibilities. Priority is given to primary caregivers, faculty who are URiM, or women faculty.

Event and Community Funding

BRI Community Program and Event Awards

Rolling Applications

Up to $10,000 funding and limited BRI staffing to support collaborative research activities (e.g. talks/symposia, workshops, poster sessions, networking events) put forward by interdisciplinary groups within the BWH research community.
