President’s Scholars Awards

Background

Funds are available in FY2025 to support the careers of Assistant or Associate Professors at BWH who have made outstanding contributions to their chosen field of research and who have exceptional potential. Through an annual competitive process, up to three investigators will be selected to receive President’s Scholar Awards in the amount of $100,000 per year for three years. Awards will be determined based on a holistic review of the candidate’s demonstrated scholarly and/or entrepreneurial accomplishments.

Process

  • This Request For Nominations (RFN) is open to all BWH departments.
  • Each BWH department chair may nominate up to three candidates in FY2025. Self-nomination not permitted.
  • The President of MGB Academic Medical Centers, in consultation with BRI leadership, will evaluate nominees and select awardees.

Eligibility

  • All members of the BWH research community with a rank of Assistant or Associate Professor are invited to speak to their chair about nominations.
  • Applicants must hold a full-time appointment at BWH.
  • Nominees must hold an R01 or R01 equivalent. The R00 years of a K99 award count as an R01 equivalent
  • Nominees working on any type of research/scientific theme will be considered.
  • Nominees need not be US citizens or permanent residents.

Review Criteria

Applications will be evaluated on the following:

  • Strength of nomination package.
  • Applicant’s accomplishments in terms of publications, intellectual property generated etc.
  • Applicant’s contributions to science.
  • Applicant’s potential to remain/progress in the tenure track system at BWH.

Reciprocity

  • Recipients will be obligated to participate in an annual event, at which supporters of the Award may be present, at the President’s invitation.
  • Recipients will respond to BRI surveys on outcomes of this funding, and provide a written and/or oral report to the BRI and BWH leadership as requested.
  • Awardees will acknowledge the BWH President’s Scholar Award in papers, talks, posters, journal/media articles and grants.

Submission Requirements

Departmental nominations (maximum of three per department) are due March 3rd, 2025 at 11:00 pm EST and must be submitted online here.

Application requires upload of the following documents in PDF format:

  • Nominee’s NIH biosketch
  • Statement from department chair on why nominee is exemplary and deserving of the President’s Scholar Award. If this award is critical to retention, chair may mention in the letter – limit to one-page PDF.

 

Please note that this is an internal grant and is NOT subjected to the Research Management deadline for external grants.
