HubWeek

October 11, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Explore innovation happening inside Brigham Health through an interactive scavenger hunt. You will have the opportunity to discover breakthrough research and cutting-edge technologies by finding Brigham Health clinicians, researchers, and staff using the Brigham’s new indoor navigation tool. Complete tasks and challenges as you find out what it’s like to be a doctor in space, co-create a digital experience, and learn how to save a life. During your adventure, you’ll have a chance to win various prizes. End your scavenger hunt by hearing pitches from this year’s BRIght Futures finalists and networking with the Brigham community and the greater Boston innovation ecosystem.

3:00 – 5:00 P.M.

HUBWeek visitors will check in at the registration desk, located in the Schlager Family Innovation Lobby (60 Fenwood Rd., ground floor), and will be given different route options to navigate the Brigham halls. Visitors will go on a scavenger hunt to different areas of the hospital where they will be presented with tasks and challenges from teams highlighted below:

CO-CREATE THE MOBILE BRIGHAM EXPERIENCE: BRIGHAM DIGITAL INNOVATION HUB

HUBWeek visitors will provide opinions, feedback and personal stories which could inform the design of the Brigham App. This session will follow the iHub Innovation Series “Problem Pitch” format. Participants will be able to:

  • Tell their health care experience stories (from being a patient, visiting loved ones, etc.)
  • Brainstorm app features.
  • Vote on features they believe are the most important.

  • Step into a NASA Space suit and experience “blast-off”!
  • A fellow “astronaut” will complain of chest pain and difficulty breathing.
  • Under the guidance of an expert physician, get hands-on experience by treating the mock medical emergency.

STOP THE BLEED: PRESENTED BY THE GILLIAN RENY STEPPING STRONG CENTER FOR TRAUMA INNOVATION

Stop the Bleed” is a nationwide campaign to train bystanders to prevent an injured person from dying of blood loss. Locally, the program has been led by Dr. Eric Goralnick, the Medical Director of Emergency Preparedness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  His research has been used to train personnel at hospitals and Gillette Stadium this year. Visitors will learn life-saving techniques on how to use tourniquets to stop bleeding after a traumatic injury.

Featured Innovator: Dr. Justin McCarthy, DO

5:00 – 5:20 P.M.

LIVE BRIGHT FUTURES EVENT: PRESENTED BY THE BRIGHAM RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Join us for a special, live pitch session and help shape the future of research! Hear from the 2017 BRIght Futures finalists whose cutting-edge projects focus on using ultrasound waves to treat patients with epilepsy (Break the Shake: Ultrasound Treatment for Epilepsy); targeting cancer cells to treat brain tumors (Ready, Aim, Fire: Targeting Advanced Brain Cancer); and a pill people can take to help reverse type 2 diabetes (Surgery in a Pill: Reversing Type 2 Diabetes). Finalists will deliver short, engaging talks focused on how their ideas will solve a challenging problem and improve the lives of patients. The event will be livestreamed on BWH’s Facebook channel and will be available for viewing after the event for those who cannot attend in person. The public vote will determine which finalist will receive a $100,000 prize from the Brigham Research Institute to catalyze their innovative, translational research.

5:20 – 6:00 P.M.

After the presentation portion of the event, the 2017 BRIght Futures finalists will share their research projects to HUBWeek visitors. Individual “perspective booths” will give the audience the opportunity to meet these innovators in person, ask any questions they may have about their projects and vote for a winner. This will take place in conjunction with an overall networking event, which will also feature expo tables highlighting other innovative teams and projects within Brigham Health.
